David Krut Art Space, New York
Established in the West Chelsea Building in 2001, David Krut Art Space continues to connect American art collectors to the David Krut Workshop (DKW) in Johannesburg. David Krut’s collaborations with print workshops commenced 1981 in London continuing to post-Apartheid South Africa in the 1990s. Collaborations with Johannesburg-based artist William Kentridge began in 1992, leading to the first solo exhibition of his editioned works in Chicago in 1998. In 2002 a collaborative print studio opened in Johannesburg.
The New York Art Space is known for introducing artists such as Kentridge, El Anatsui, Aida Muluneh and photographer Santu Mofokeng to American audiences.
Amé Bell, who curated the South African Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2022, has led the collaborative program for young emerging artists with with four skilled printers in Johannesburg. Kim-Lee Loggenberg-Tim, Sbongiseni Khulu, Roxy Kaczmarek and Jesse Shepstone have nearly forty years of collaborative work experience between them. Jillian Ross, who spent 17 years working at the Johannesburg studio, has recently established her own workshop in her hometown of Saskatoon in Canada.
The SOUTH AFRICAN ARTISTS IN NEW YORK program provides an insight to American collectors of selected emerging young artists exhibited for the first time in the USA, together with new editions by William Kentridge from Johannesburg.
The New York Art Space has recently received a veteran printing press provided by Ashevillebased Philip Sanders for his collaborations when in New York.
A traveling exhibition of works from the Universal Archive series by William Kentridge, created at DKW, is touring North America in collaboration with the Gund Gallery of Kenyon College.
